Thirsty Souls

For years, I dealt with many teens who struggled with a lot of self-hate, depression, and condemnation. Young people would get into a vicious cycle of collecting other people’s negative opinions about who they were. If left unchecked, they would then internalize a bad self-image, and eventually adopt evil ideas of who they were—their lives so dark without someone to tell them truth in love.

Unfortunately, church seemed to be the last resort for many of these depressed and thirsty souls. By the time they got to me, It would take months of praise and sincere compliments just to get them to a place where they would admit their life had value. It was like slowly nursing someone back to health from severe dehydration.

Like water, people need encouragement everyday. No one ever gets to a place where they don’t need to be encouraged anymore. Yet today, we live in a desert of negative opinions, and dry and tasteless talk. People are so thirsty to be praised and genuinely valued.

I am just as guilty as the next guy, but many times we go through our entire day oblivious to the drought many people are experiencing inside. The Holy Spirit is calling us all out of our little safe oasis of self, and asking us to start running buckets of encouragement to people.

Proverbs 25:25 declares, “Good news from far away is like cold water to the thirsty.” And the Apostle Paul writes, “ So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

After we have delivered buckets of refreshing encouragement to others, the next best thing we can do is lead people directly to the Source, Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (John 4:13)

When Jesus places His Spirit in someone, it comes with an endless tap to encouragement, love, acceptance, and comfort that quenches the most thirsty soul. It is an eternal waterfall of heaven-sent prophetic words that soon flow out off that person and into the next. I imagine that’s the type of person you are. Someone who has the fountain of God, and it is bubbling over right now.

Let me encourage you to overflow your praise and compliments on to those that are dry and weary. Your words hold the power to promote life and joy, and people need that today. You are a spring of life because Jesus abides in you. So open up the flood gates today and let them have it.

Let’s pray: Spring up oh well, and bring forth rivers of living water. Let it run deep and let it run wide, springing up words of eternal life. Lord Jesus, let me be a source of encouragement today. Amen!
